Job Description

Abbott seeks a Senior Bioinformatics Scientist for its Cancer Diagnostics division in La Jolla to lead complex bioinformatics projects. The role involves algorithm development, pipeline prototyping, and machine learning model creation for germline sequencing and variant analysis, with mentorship responsibilities for junior team members.

Responsibilities

• Develop and optimize algorithms for improving germline variant calling sensitivity
• Build and prototype bioinformatics pipelines supporting germline sequencing applications
• Create machine learning models for variant classification and clinical significance prediction
• Lead or participate in planning and execution of complex research and development projects as technical lead or subject matter expert
• Mentor and provide technical guidance to junior scientists on project teams

Requirements

• Ph.D. in bioinformatics, computational biology, computer science, mathematics, or related field; or equivalent Master's with 4 years experience; or Bachelor's with 6 years experience
• 5+ years bioinformatics experience in industry or academia
• 3+ years medical device, IVD, biotech, life science, or pharmaceutical industry experience
• Extensive Linux-based HPC or cloud computing environment expertise with associated tools
• Proficiency writing custom code in at least three programming or scripting languages
• Technical expertise in molecular biology, biochemistry, next-generation sequencing, or genomics
• Working knowledge of statistical and mathematical methods in biology and genetics with software experience (JMP, R)

Compensation: $90,000–$180,000 base
